The IKKA story

Agi and I have always wanted to do something that makes a lasting impact; to find a cause that’s worth fighting for, and to come up with something that changes our future for the better.
The world is filled with wonder and adventure everywhere we turn: from the playfulness of the clouds and the picturesque colors of the sunset, through the fragrance of the forests and the awe that hits us when we look up at the glittering night sky, to the relaxing sound of flowing water, we’re surrounded by boundless beauty.
However, looking at what’s happening around the globe today, it’s also markedly clear that things are headed in the wrong direction.
In 2018 September, inspired by the overwhelming beauty of our planet and spurred by the growing number and severity of environmental issues our world is facing, we finally had our light bulb moment: how about we combine our obsession for quality mechanical watches with our love of nature?
As an engineer, Agi believes in tangible, technical solutions. On the other hand, I’ve always been a more adventurous, intuitive type of person. It was our innate differences that laid the groundwork for everything that came after. In a short while, our idea has started to take a very distinct, rounded shape, and following a year of hard work, IKKA was created.

OUR MISSION

We believe that to truly enjoy life, you have to live it one second at a time. That’s why we have created IKKA, a watch brand with a green spin, made for city-dwelling thrill-seekers who want to take back control over their most valuable asset: Time.

We fashion high quality, sleek, and sophisticated timepieces that help you stay in the moment wherever you go, whatever you do. Because only by focusing on the here and now, can you really start living your life to the fullest.

What’s more, after every watch we sell, we plant a princess tree or deliver it straight to your door, driving home our message about the significance of individual action and building a more sustainable future. This way, your watch becomes more than just a portable measurement device: it will also act as a reminder of giving nature one more tool to heal itself with, wrapped neatly around your wrist.

PLANT A TREE

About princess trees and their climatic benefits

The combined effect of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions is becoming an ever growing threat to our ecosystems. These issues affect every country in the world, and they are partly caused by the rapid and large scale social and economic developments of the past century. The ever-expanding carbon footprint of industrial development, extremely high levels of car traffic, and power plants is no longer a match for Earth’s declining forests.

We’ve spent a lot of time searching for the right species of tree that can adapt to almost any environment, until we’ve finally stumbled upon princess trees. Popular for their ability to produce high volumes of oxygen, princess trees are also favored in landscaping as ornamental trees.

Known for their high tolerance, fire resistance, and flexibility, princess trees are rapid growers, thanks to a unique evolutionary adaptation that allows them to use C4 carbon fixation: they can put on up to 1 meter of height each year, while their nitrogen-rich leaves provide good fodder, and their roots prevent soil erosion. Requiring nothing more but full sun and regular watering for proper growth, princess trees absorb 10 times more carbon dioxide than any other tree species, releasing large quantities of oxygen into the atmosphere. This makes them a perfect choice to purify the air from pollutants and to combat the effects of industrialization.

In just a few years, they can absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, thanks to their outstanding growth rate and huge leaves. In addition, princess trees bind dust, produce oxygen, improve degraded soil, combat desertification, and by releasing water into the atmosphere, they can also cool the air around them.

In short, princess trees are a genuinely valuable asset in our fight against climate change.

Princess Tree Planting Guide

Preparation: Soak the sapling’s roots in water for a few hours, then store the sapling in a cool place and out of the sun for a couple of days, and repeat the soaking. Planting must take place within one week of receiving the sapling. For longer term storage of the sapling, bury its roots in slightly damp sand between 0-10 degrees Celsius.

Soil: Princess trees can be planted in almost all types of soil, but try to avoid soils with a clay content of 30% of more. The soil layer should be at least 1.5 meters thick. Stones of any size pose no danger to the growth of the sapling’s roots as long as there’s no rock layer directly beneath the tree.

Preferred pH value of the soil should be between 5.5 and 8.5. The planting pit must be between 80 and 100 centimeters deep.

Avoid planting Princess trees in areas with high groundwater. Groundwater must be 1.5 meters below ground level, young trees should be watered adequately, however.

Planting plan: Princess trees can be planted throughout the year (autumn and spring are recommended), similar to fruit trees. Princess trees require full sunlight for optimal growth, so avoid planting it nearby other trees and buildings that may overshadow them. A minimum of 5 meters distance is advised.
As Princess trees grow tall, be sure not to plant it under power lines. In case you’re planning on planting it in the place of another tree (such as a pine tree), make sure that the tree did not acidify the soil. If there are small animals in your garden, try to fence off the sapling in a 1-meter diameter.

It is advisable to mix half of the excavated soil with ripe fertilizer (one or two buckets is sufficient) and fill the pit back to a depth of 30-40 cm, and then plant the sapling. In this way, you can provide a soft, loose, nutrient-rich soil that promotes rapid growth of young roots.

Watering: When planting the sapling, water it abundantly. Afterwards, however, until the foliage is formed, only water the plant scarcely, just enough that the soil around the root system does not dry out completely. In the summer heat, careful irrigation during the first and second years is crucial (about 50 liters a week on average in hot weather), after that the root system will become strong enough to endure summer heatwaves.
